Society faced with surface water quality change (France, 19th-20th century)

The Water Framework Directive (2000) deeply contributed to modify our look at water, its management and its vulnerability. This project which associates historians, geographers, political scientists, jurists, sociologists, geochemists, hydrologists and engineers, aims at revisiting the concept of water quality according to a pluridisciplinary approach, by taking into account the coevolution of the water and society and analysing the both the social and scientific dimension of water quality.

Laurence Lestel (UMR Sisyphe) is director of the project, which associates the UMR 7619 Sisyphe (CNRS & Université Paris VI), the UMR Géographie-Cités, the UMR 6590 ESO, the EA 6293 GéoHydrosytèmes Continentaux and IRSTEA

Responsible for Géographie-Cités : Sabine Barles (responsible of task 2: “the defined quality, emergency and transformation of regulation, 1854-2012.
