Elfie Swerts has a PhD in geography from the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
She carried out her thesis under the direction of Denise Pumain and Eric Denis in the Laboratory of Geography-Cities (CNRS-.
She received a fellowship “CIFRE - Industrial Agreement for Research Training” from Veolia Environment Recherche et Innovation under the responsibility of Michel MORVAN. She is currently postdoctoral researcher in the framework of the ERC GeoDiverCity (European Research Council advanced grant), carried by Denise PUMAIN.
Her research focuses on the dynamics of cities in China and India and the systems they form, and rely on demographic and economic databases, harmonized in time and space.
Within the ERC GeoDiverCity ( http://geodivercity.parisgeo.cnrs.fr/blog/ ), she is studying the retrospective and prospective modeling of urban systems in India and China, and the economic links between the cities of these two systems with the rest of the world through the ORBIS project ( http://www3.unil.ch/wpmu/citadyne-news/ ) driven by Céline ROZENBLAT . This research is strengthened by addressing the questions of the small towns dynamics in India, in collaboration with the ANR SUBURBIN ( http://suburbin.hypotheses.org ) led by Eric DENIS and Marie- Hélène ZERAH ( Centre de Sciences Humaines, New Delhi), and of the financial and real estate dynamics in urban systems in India and China, in collaboration with the ANR FINURBASIE ( http://finurbasie.hypotheses.org/1 ) driven by Natacha AVELINE- DUBACH (Director of Research CNRS , UMR 8504 Geography - Cities ) and Ludovic HALBERT ( CNRS researcher attached to Laboratory Techniques , Territories , Societies of the University Paris -Est).
